Top 3 reasons to consider EV charging points in your business
The electric vehicle is the future of transportation and for businesses investing in infrastructure, EV charging points are an essential investment.
The RAC estimates there are around 239,000 zero-emission Battery Electric Vehicles on the UK’s roads — along with 259,000 plug-in hybrids and 629,000 conventional hybrids. By 2030, those numbers are expected to rise to 6.5 million.
Sure, installing EV charging points ensures your preparedness for such a monumental shift in the way people travel to work, but there are other benefits to consider. Here are just a few you really ought to know
You can receive a Workplace Charging Grant from the government
To make the whole thing more accessible (reasons for which we’ll get to in a moment), the government offers initiatives to help support and encourage organisations looking to install electric vehicle charging facilities at their workplace.
The Workplace Charging Grant scheme, which was introduced by the Government’s Office for Low Emission Vehicles, allows businesses to claim up to £14,000 towards the cost of installing EV charging points.
Furthermore, as announced in this year’s budget, some businesses may be eligible to take advantage of tax super-deductions applicable to new equipment (including EV charging points). This new policy will allow companies to cut their tax bill by up to 25p for every £1 invested.
It’s also worth noting there are some pretty significant financial incentives on offer to businesses with electric fleets and vehicles. These include exemptions from fuel duty, road tax, company car tax and van and car benefit charge.
A boost to your sustainability efforts
For quite some time now, the UK government has been applying pressure on businesses to reduce their carbon footprint and work towards greener solutions. A significant aspect of that effort includes bringing forward environmental targets concerning the use of petrol and diesel vehicles.
Providing EV charging points in the workplace is certainly one of those greener solutions that will satisfy these requirements. And while there is no such pressurised transition period marked on the calendar just yet, installing EV charging points sooner rather than later will put your business in front of the curve of demand.
Of course, this isn’t just about ticking boxes. Every organisation has a responsibility to curb its environmental impact. With 26% of all carbon emissions being generated from transport, businesses must do everything they can to offset this number. Providing EV charging points not only ensures your own standards of environmental responsibility but also helps your employees and customers do the same — which can only be a good thing for everybody!
A provision of essential, straightforward facilities
As the electric vehicle market increases, so do the responsibilities put on businesses to provide their employees and customers access to EV charging points. It’s simply the case that electric vehicle drivers will need to, and expect to, charge their vehicles at their workplace.
The same thing goes for anybody visiting or using your premises in a professional capacity. For example, retail businesses have been known to benefit significantly from EV charging points, as they motivate customers to stay longer and browse longer when they have straightforward access to charging facilities
Although the most apparent way EV charging can boost profits is the revenue stream earned from the stations themselves. Depending on the business model you choose, you can generate additional income by setting charging fees, and your customers will be more than happy to pay them.
